Wonder Northwest 2012: Day 2

We woke up bright and early for day two of the convention and couldn’t wait to get going! Today we were looking forward to several panels and the costume contest.

Image

We accidentally caught the tail end of the Lego panel which was very entertaining

Image

Our first actual panel was about comic book restoration

Image

Followed by the Kick Ass Horror Movies You Have Never Heard Of panel. This panel was a blast and we went home with a great list of unique movies to check out. Chatting with the panelists afterward was so awesome.

Image

Since the costume contest was that night, cosplayers were out in droves

Tony discovered and fell in love with Lego figures and has decided to collect them and use them for hilarious pictures.

On to the highlight of the weekend- the costume contest! Before the contest I got the chance to meet one of my favorite photographers (I feel terrible his name escapes me) Jailbreak Photography. I fan girled all over him, but he was super nice and answered my questions *squee*

Ok- on to the costume contest! There were lots of entries, so here are few of my very favorites:

Wonder Northwest 2012: Day 1

Wonder Northwest is a newer geeky pop culture convention that we got to cover this year for Skewed and Reviewed Magazine. It was our first real “press” assignment (we got free passes and everything!), so everything was extra exciting. Here are our adventures from the first day of the con! My first *squee* will be about the mega awesome convention badges!

Image

Shortly after our arrival and quick jaunt through the vendor area, we headed into our first panel- NERDFIGHT!!! This panel consisted of the local geek authorities who would argue out certain points (like other than Bale- who was the best Batman?, What is the best gaming console of all time etc). They would then vote on the final answer and that was now the new nerd law! This was the most awesome, hilarious, and surprising panel of the whole convention. I hope they do it both days next year, because we could not get enough!

Image

This panel was a great way to kick off the con, but this day was also awesome because we brought our son and Tony’s little brother (who were both very worn out by the end!).

Image

Image

The small vendor floor was packed full of all kinds of treasures!

Comic books

Image

Image

Vintage Toys (I splurged on starting a My Little Pony collection and got a Viewmaster)

Image

Image

Games

Image

Piratey Goods

Image

And my personal favorite- super cute geeky goods!

Image

Image

I also talked a vendor into selling me this Toki Doki Rogue off the rack that I’ve been after for months! It helped I was wearing the matching t-shirt.

Image

There was also a DJ on the vendor floor at all times kicking out an eclectic (to put it nicely) mix of tunes.

Image

In addition to the vendor floor, there was also a Podcast Alley where several local podcasters were available to meet & chat with. I finally got to meet Aaron with geek in the city who I’ve been friends with on Facebook for some time. Give you a hint- he’s the one with the rockin beard.

Image

We also found a Lego Room with a giant “airship” and Diesel was pretty excited about their free build area.

Image

Image

The first day of Wonder NW also had a Micro Mini Geek Film Festival. It featured web series and home grown filmmakers works.

Image

We also spent a lot of time in the gaming room. The volunteers taught us how to play Fluxx

Image

and we showed Diesel & Mark how to play Magic

Image

We learned about lots of upcoming local geeky events that we’ve been missing out on

Image

And enjoyed seeing all the cosplayers

Image

Image

Image

The night ended with some awesome geektastic music by The Doubleclicks and Asteroid M

Image

Image

Image

It seems fitting that Diesel’s first concert would be at a comic convention! It was such an awesome first day we could hardly believe we got a whole other day of fun in store!

Image

On our way out we got caught in torrential downpour and lightning storm which caught everyone by surprise after the gorgeous sun we’d had all day! We feared for our lives a little bit on the way home!

Image

We did make it home safe and eagerly awaited day 2!

Free Comic Book Day

Image

Image

Every year as a family we attend free comic book day. This is a day were several comic book companies release mini & teaser comics and give them out for free at local comic shops. The shops also do giveaways, sales, signings, and other fun events.

We usually start at the Things From Another World (TFAW) near our house. First you wait in a rather long line, but the staff usually brings free food of some sort to  you while you wait. This year it was mini subway cookies- yum!

Image

Image

Image

Finally, the line is moving!

Image

Image

Once inside you get to choose 10 free comics.

Image

We selected our free comics and battled our way through the crowd to get back out the front door of the shop. Outside were storm troopers and other costumed wonders that made for a great photo op.

Image

Image

Next we headed out the Hollywood TFAW to enjoy more free comic book day festivities.

Image

This is a must every year as this is where all the pirates usually hang out

Image

Image

We stopped at a few other shops this year, but they all failed in comparison to our TFAW’s.

Image

Image

Image

Diesel had a blast as always and was able to get a nice stack of comics for himself this year. He also represented his geek culture hard with the sweet transformers shirt we got him from comicon this year.

Image

This year, Free Comic Book Day also happened to fall on Cinco de Mayo

Image

So we ended our day with an awesome Cinco de Mayo lunch at Pepitas. Virgin margaritas all around! Ay ay ay!

Image

Another successful Free Comic Book Day under our belts. Can’t wait until it comes around again next year!

Comicon 2012

This was the second year my boyfriend Tony and I attended Emerald City Comicon in Seattle. Only this time we were kid-free!

I naturally took tons of cosplay pictures! Here are a few of my favorites:

Several of my cosplay pictures were published on the Skewed and Reviewed website at: http://sknr.net/2012/04/04/emerald-city-comicon-2012-images/ and http://sknr.net/2012/04/04/emerald-city-comicon-2012-images-set-2/

I also got to meet some of my very favorite artists- Camilla d’Errico and Alex Pardee!

We attended the Wil Wheaton 90 minute Awesome Hour Panel- with about 3,000 other people. He was hilarious! If you ever get a chance to go to his panel I highly recommend it!!!

We also got to meet comic legend Mark Silvestri – although we had to wait an hour and a half in order to do so. Yeah- and we were at the front part of the line!

My pride and joy purchases this year was my life counter necklace and my new moogle!

On the last day we had some commissions done in artist alley. Pretty romantic!

We had few real pictures taken too!

Such an awesome weekend! We came home with some serious swag too!

Can’t wait until next year!!!
